Data Strategy and Platform Implementation

Case study with Relationships Australia WA

Introducing Relationships WA

For over 70 years, Relationships Australia Western Australia has been a trusted provider of counselling and support services for individuals, couples, families, and communities across WA and it continues to offer its services while also evolving to meet the changing needs of the community.

In pursuit of their vision of being the best at supporting people to thrive in their communities, Relationships Australia WA is committed to being an insights-driven organisation.

Challenges: legacy platforms and siloed data

Relationships Australia WA prioritises allocation of available resources towards maximising its contribution to the Western Australian community and, as the organisation has grown, identified a need to further streamline workflows and address reporting challenges due to legacy platforms and siloed program data.

To embark upon a review of their data management landscape and associated architecture, the team brought DataDivers on board.

Approach: tried and tested strategic planning method

To address their key data-related challenges, Relationships Australia WA collaborated with DataDivers to develop a data strategy and its associated roadmap for execution. We introduced a tried and tested method for developing a data strategy, bringing with us a business capability mapping tool, high-level architecture frameworks, and agile ways of working. This approach forms DataDivers’s Horizons service offering.

In conjunction with developing the Relationships Australia WA data strategy, DataDivers designed and established a modern, Azure-based data analytics platform and reporting dashboards.

Solution: roadmap co-creation and platform implementation

For timely delivery, a five-person team kicked off the project to execute parallel paths of work.

As a first step in the data strategy and roadmapping work, our Data Divers interviewed key internal stakeholders to understand individual needs for enhanced reporting experiences. This enabled the team to outline high-value use cases to execute in the short, medium, and long term, ensuring that the future state architecture aligned with Relationships Australia WA’s long-term requirements.

With this understanding, alongside a comprehensive business capability analysis and a focus on data culture, DataDivers co-created a long-term strategic roadmap.

Working in parallel and armed with these strategic insights, our Senior Architects and Engineers commenced designing and implementing the data platform. Guided by the data architecture and roadmap, the implementation strategy included:

  • Modelling of client records from Microsoft Dynamics and TechnologyOne data.
  • Designing and developing reports that are pivotal to Relationships Australia WA’s ongoing reporting requirements.
  • Addressing operating model, reporting, and data governance requirements.

Outcome: clear direction and capability uplift

Following this dive journey, Relationships Australia WA is standing in a robust position with a clear path forward and impactful technology uplift, in the form of:

  • A three-year data strategy and implementation roadmap
  • A new central data platform around Microsoft Azure products
  • Operating model and data governance frameworks for their analytics capabilities and their team
  • Data ingested into the new Relationships Australia WA data platform from Microsoft Dynamics and TechnologyOne
  • High value dashboards and analytics for senior leadership

Benefits: efficiency, insights, and new opportunities

At the outset, Relationships Australia WA had a clear and strong desire to improve operational reporting and ensure an uplift in data quality and governance processes. With the project that DataDivers delivered, benefits delivered include:

  • Increased efficiency in identified reporting workflows. As the dashboards and reports are now essentially real-time, metrics are readily available with little effort.
  • Having data reporting consolidated into one location ensures future endeavours towards more advanced insights are enabled and ready to go.
